Chelsea Could Be Forced To Abandon £100M Summer Transfer Raid In Worst Case Scenario

Chelsea will find it “almost impossible” to sign Morgan Rogers this summer if they don’t finish in the Champions League places, according to reports.

Writing in an article for The Telegraph, journalist Matt Law said that the England international’s sky-high valuation means it will be a tough task securing his signature even if the Blues manage to clinch a top 4/5 spot:

“Villa star Morgan Rogers is a player who is constantly linked with Chelsea and his £100m-plus price tag will make it difficult for any club to sign him, regardless of Champions League qualification”

“But failure to qualify for the Champions League would make a move for Rogers, or anybody of his quality, almost impossible and not just financially.”

Rogers has been on the radar for quite some time

Rumours about Chelsea’s interest in the 23-year-old first emerged in April last year, so it looks like they have been keeping tabs on him for at least the last twelve months.

It should not be forgotten either that Co-Director of Recruitment and Talent Joe Shields has known Rogers since his time at Manchester City.

With the Blues having already recruited other former City academy players like Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia and Liam Delap, it is safe to say that Shields has had some influence on the club’s pursuit of Rogers as well.

Should Chelsea be prioritising another no.10?

While Rogers can play wide on the left, his preferred position is attacking midfielder, which isn’t an area that Chelsea need to reinforce, unless Palmer is truly angling for a move away from Stamford Bridge.

A goalkeeper, a centre-back and another striker should really be further up the list of priorities for the recruitment team, but it must be said that the club’s transfer strategy has not always followed logic.
