A look at how many points Arsenal need to secure the Premier League title.

Arsenal strengthened their grip on the Premier League title during the week, moving seven points ahead of Manchester City having played a game more. The Gunners scraped through a win over Brighton, producing one of their worst performances of the season but still coming away with all three points.

Manchester City, meanwhile, failed to beat Nottingham Forest, and their draw allowed Arsenal to take City’s title fate out of their hands. The title was previously in the hands of both teams, given City have a game in hand and still have to play Arsenal.

The Gunners now have exclusive control, and they will be bidding to keep hold of it down the stretch.

How many points do Arsenal need to win the Premier League title?

Given even Manchester City can still reach a maximum of 87 points, an exact number cannot be placed on the Premier League title, other than the 88-point maximum, but we can start by looking at the last 10 years to get a realistic average.

To calculate this, we have taken the final points total of each of the last 10 second placed teams, added a point to calculate the minimum points needed to win the title without requiring goal difference, and we then add the 10 totals and divide them to get an average.

The average required over the last 10 years is 83.9 points, so we can call that 84 points. Interestingly, the Opta predicted table suggests that Arsenal will actually get to that number, with an average expected points total of 83.98 expected.

But Manchester City are only expected to get 75.69 points, which would mean the Gunners only need 76 points to wrap up the title. Arsenal would require only nine points from eight games to reach that total, while City would need 17 points from a possible 27 just to reach that total.

In the case of the average, Arsenal would need 17 points from a possible 24, while City would need 24 points from a possible 27, which is a huge ask.
