One month in, head coach Mike Brown has seen enough to make a bold claim about the Brooklyn-born guard’s impact on this roster.

Ahead of Wednesday night’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Brown was asked for his assessment of Alvarado’s first month in New York. He did not hold back.
“The quickness is irreplaceable. It gives us a different look,” Brown told reporters. “He’s different in a way that kind of stands out. Jose was available, and I give Leon [Rose] credit, he got him. It’s helped us on both ends of the floor. The energy on top of the quickness that he brings to the table, every time we step on the floor, is irreplaceable. At least with the guys that we had, or the guys that we have. Just different.”
Irreplaceable. That is a strong word for a player who has been with the team for just over a month. But Brown’s reasoning is sound. The Knicks want to play fast, and Alvarado’s quickness gives them a dimension that nobody else on the roster provides.

The numbers tell part of the story. In 11 appearances with the Knicks, Alvarado is averaging 7.5 points, 3.8 assists, and 1.4 steals per game in 18.9 minutes. His three-point shooting has been inconsistent at 29.4 percent, but his overall field goal percentage remains in line with his career averages.
More than the numbers, though, it is the energy. Alvarado helped the Knicks complete an 18-point comeback win over the Houston Rockets last month, the kind of moment that defines a player’s early impression on a new team. He brings a defensive intensity and a pace that shifts the feel of a game the moment he steps on the floor.

What His Role Looks Like Going Forward
Wednesday night against Oklahoma City offered a glimpse of what Alvarado’s playoff role might look like once the Knicks are fully healthy. He made just one of four shots and played only 12 minutes, briefly spelling Jalen Brunson for just over a minute in the fourth quarter before returning to the bench.
The reality is that once Miles McBride returns from injury, Alvarado will likely see his minutes reduced. The Knicks have not yet had Brunson, McBride, and Alvarado healthy at the same time, and when that day comes, Brown will have some interesting decisions to make about his rotation.
But smaller minutes does not mean smaller impact. Alvarado’s quickness and defensive energy make him a weapon in specific matchups, and Brown has already shown he trusts him in big moments. In a playoff setting, that kind of schematic flexibility could prove just as valuable as raw minutes.

The Knicks went looking for a ball handler at the deadline and came away with something more than that. Alvarado brings an energy and a pace that this roster did not have before he arrived.
