Huge injury blow for Rovers as Everton loanee ruled out for season

Frankie Okoronkwo's time at Doncaster Rovers is over after the Everton loanee suffered a season-ending injury.

The centre-forward only joined in January and was making a good impression after scoring once in five games but he'll now return to his parent club after suffering a fresh injury - another hamstring concern.

Speaking ahead of Rovers' long trip down to Devon to face Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, the Northern Irishman provided a fresh update on the loanee - and it wasn't good news.

"Frankie's going to be out for the rest of the season," McCann said. "He's recovered brilliantly from the hamstring on his left leg and during his rehab he's tweaked his other one. It's a bit of a blow for us because he hadn't even done any sprint distances yet so for him to pull his other hamstring by some high speed running is really strange.

"Dave (Rennie, head of medical) hasn't seen anything like that before. So we won't see him again and he's gone back to Everton which is a shame because he was good for us when he was here. He was really disappointed when he came and saw me to say thanks and how much he'd enjoyed his time here. He felt it was the best loan he's had but he's not really been able to make an impact.

"He was probably limited in game time at Lincoln but he's come here and he's gone four or five games (in succession) on the spin which he maybe wasn't used to. But what I think Frankie needs to do - and he knows this himself - is he needs to get some serious advice from the top people to find out why this is happening - and I think he's maybe gone there already, to London, to do that.

"He's got all the tools to be a top, top player and I just feel sorry for him because he's gutted he can't help us until the end of the season."

Meanwhile, Sean Grehan is making good progress as he recovers from his own hamstring-related injury but Tom Nixon has picked up a knock - also hamstring - and is likely to miss out against the Pilgrims.
