Selling Jarell Quansah last summer is a decision that Liverpool probably regret now, but will he be back?

Liverpool will get the cheque-book out in the summer, even if a repeat of last year’s spending is highly unlikely.

The three key positions that need to be addressed are on the wing, a defensive midfielder and a centre-half, all of which should be first-team ready players rather than project signings or players with potential. Richard Hughes will want to minimise risk, especially after missing out on sure things Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi to Man City. One way to minimise risk is to sign a player who already knows what it takes to win at Anfield.

Liverpool make Jarell Quansah transfer decision

Reports have suggested that Liverpool are considering bringing Jarell Quansah back to the club, however, according to GiveMeSport transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, this might not be the case, for now: “GMS understands Liverpool are not planning to trigger the buyback clause this summer, but the whole point of it is to give them a long-term option to bring Quansah back to Anfield. This possibility is certainly not ruled out, but currently more likely in 2027 and beyond.”

Quansah’s decision to move to the Bundesliga to gain more experience is proving to be a wise one after having to make do with rotating in and out of the starting XI at Liverpool. The buy-back option on his £35m transfer to Bayer Leverkusen is said to be in the region of £52.5m which could end up being below market value if the 22-year old’s progress continues at its current rate.

What Arne Slot said about Jarell Quansah

At the end of last season, Arne Slot reckoned that there was only one aspect of the England international’s play that he needed to work on to become a top player and a regular for the club he grew up at: "He has all the qualities and he is already shown that to me - but also to you - to play for this club. But the biggest part of us winning the league is of course consistency and that is the most difficult part for a younger player to get that as well. Some, like Lamine Yamal, it's not a really big problem for him to find consistency.

"But Jarell, I think he developed really well throughout the whole season and the next step is for him to not be involved in a moment like this (conceding a late penalty v Chelsea in May) in the last minutes, which had no impact on the result. It would've been nice for him if it wouldn't have happened because then probably everyone would've been much more positive about his performance.

"Jarell is fast, strong and comfortable on the ball. He has every ingredient a centre-back for this club should have. Now the last parts should be consistency in his performances." A quality that he has since added to his game.
