Jets rumor could lead to Giants-sized 2-QB mistake

The New York Jets are apparently considering an odd path toward their 2026 starting quarterback gig.

And in the process, they're looking at the New York Giants as an example.

If that sounds like it might not be a good thing, that's a fair assessment.

SNY's Connor Hughes reported Friday morning, "Belief from agents who met with them at the NFL Combine is that they prefer to add two -- if they can. It's similar to what the #Giants did a year ago (Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston)."

As every sports fan in NYC knows, signing Russ and Jameis worked out wonderfully for the Giants.

Hughes goes on to suggest Geno Smith and Carson Wentz as the most likely pairing.

Smith, of course, began his NFL career with the Jets before eventually blossoming in Seattle (and scuffling in 2025 with the Raiders).

Wentz is close with Frank Reich, the new offensive coordinator for the Jets, according to Hughes, who quotes a source as saying, "No one loves Wentz more than Frank."

There isn't anything inherently wrong with bringing in two veteran quarterbacks, presumably after releasing Justin Fields, but it doesn't do anything to solve the problem long term. In addition, it can create potential confusion now, as the team tries to figure out which of these two over-the-hill passers should start.

The Giants at least did the smart thing and still drafted Jaxson Dart, who got to watch and learn for a bit before taking over.

There aren't a ton of highly touted QBs in this year's draft, so whether the Jets follow that part of the path too remains to be seen.

For now, it just seems like the Jets might be extra active in the underwhelming QB market in free agency.
