Andy Robertson’s future at Liverpool remains unclear but there is one club that he should avoid if he leaves.

Given the contracts that were handed out to Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, it is strange that another Liverpool veteran doesn’t seem to be gettin the same treatment.

Andy Robertson has shown this season that he is still more than good enough to play regularly at the highest level, and he has also shown that he is every bit as good, if not better, than Arne Slot’s blue eyed boy Milos Kerkez. The Reds boss is a stubborn soul and appears to have decided already that the Scotland captain is surplus to requirements, despite only being 31-years old and in good physical condition.

Andy Robertson’s Liverpool future unclear

In the last two transfer windows, Robertson has been the subject of bids from Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, but has seen Liverpool decide at the last minute not to let him go. As with Federico Chiesa, there is a bitter taste with how such an experienced and respected player is being treated. Not good enough to start, according to the manager, but also not allowed to leave.

As his contract ticks down, Robertson won’t be short of offers, however, what he shouldn’t be tempted to do is make an emotional move back to Celtic where it, kind of, all began. Robbo’s story is well-worn. Not quite rags to riches, although he has had to work harder than most to get to where he is now. With Kieran Tierney already at Parkhead, Robertson would be in exactly the same position that he is now. Instead, he should look for guarantees about playing time either at home or abroad where he will still be kept sharp for international football.

Do Celtic have inside track to Robertson deal?

What might cloud matters is his relationship with Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain who recently joined Celtic on a short-term deal. The former Liverpool midfielder revealed that it was Robertson who sold the move to the SPFL to him and also made it easier to move north of the border:

The Ox told The Official Celtic FC Podcast: “Having him [Robertson] as a reference point was perfect for me. He’s told me where I need to live, where I need to go. He’s told me everything. He’s a proper Glasgow boy. I just said to him, ‘It’s a shame you’re not here with me.’

“Maybe came a bit early… he might join me soon. He’s a bit younger than me, Robbo. I’d hope to see him here one day. I think he’d be amazing here.” Robertson probably would be amazing at Celtic, but unlike Tierney, who has a lengthy medical history and isn’t the player he once was, the Liverpool man shouldn’t be dropping down just yet.
