Sheffield United keeping fingers crossed over Kalvin Phillips as midfielder makes Man City return after issue v Wednesday

Sheffield United are keeping their fingers crossed that they have not seen the last of Kalvin Phillips after the Manchester City loanee suffered a knee issue in the derby clash against Wednesday last month. The former England international was sent off in that game for a challenge on Svante Ingelsson.

He was scheduled to complete his subsequent suspension this weekend when the Blades host West Bromwich Albion at Bramall Lane, and ordinarily would have been available for next Wednesday night’s trip to Norwich City.

But a previously undisclosed knee issue picked up against the Owls has thrown his availability going forward into doubt, with Phillips having returned to his parent club for investigation and treatment on the issue.

He is now back at United though, we understand, with boss Chris Wilder hoping he will be back in a red and white shirt before the end of the campaign. “Yes, he tweaked his knee in the Sheffield Wednesday game,” Wilder confirmed.

“It was a great day for a lot of us but unfortunate for him in terms of the sending off and just a minor issue. He’s had that checked out and he’s suspended as well, his final game tomorrow. As soon as we get any news on that in the medium term, we'll let you know.”

United have already suffered one huge injury blow in the last week after Michael Cooper was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee issue. Asked if he was hopeful of getting Phillips back on the pitch before his loan runs out in the summer, Wilder replied: “Yeah, we've looked back at it in terms of the challenge.

“It was an innocuous challenge, a little bit like Michael Cooper's, but hopefully it's not the same outcome. Kalvin’s done great.

“Obviously he's not our player so ultimately the decision of what happens eventually regarding Kalvin will be taken by Man City. But he's desperate to get himself out there back going again, and fingers crossed that will be the case.”
