Patrick Mahomes delivered a historic 2025 season before disaster struck in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers, when he suffered a season-ending torn ACL and LCL in his left knee.
The injury came at the worst possible moment for the Kansas City Chiefs, effectively ending their playoff hopes and sidelining the three-time Super Bowl MVP for the remainder of the campaign.
Mahomes underwent successful surgery shortly after to repair the damage, beginning an aggressive rehabilitation process with a standard eight-to-twelve-month timeline that initially cast doubt over his availability for the start of the 2026 season.

Patrick Mahomes Bombshell Recovery Update: Chiefs QB Way Ahead of Schedule on ACL/LCL Tear
Now, the outlook is dramatically more optimistic. Fox Sports NFL Insider Jay Glazer appeared on the Dan Patrick Show and delivered a major update, revealing that Patrick Mahomes is significantly ahead of schedule in his recovery and could be ready to play right from the opening week of 2026.
Glazer emphasized the quarterback’s extraordinary pain threshold, unmatched work ethic, and rapid healing ability as key factors.
“His pain threshold is different, his work ethic is different,” Glazer said. “So at first they were like, ‘Oh, you know, start of the season.’ I would probably hedge on him being [back] sooner than that. By far. Because he just attacks things.”
Glazer highlighted that Mahomes underwent surgery almost immediately after the injury—before significant swelling occurred—which accelerated his progress.
“The initial reports were kind of on the fringe there, but I want to tell you, Patrick’s different,” he added. “He got (the surgery) before it swelled up. So, that was on a Tuesday. I believe it was either Thursday or Friday that week, he was already in the Chiefs’ training room doing rehab. And he had already got his knee bending at 90 degrees at that point. He’s just different, he heals differently.”
Here is the video:
The surgery was performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Dan Cooper, the Dallas Cowboys’ team physician, whose expertise in high-profile athlete recoveries has contributed to shortened timelines in recent years. While traditional ACL recoveries often span 12 months, advances in surgical techniques, rehab protocols, and Mahomes’ elite conditioning have positioned him for a potential full return well ahead of the norm.
Why Patrick Mahomes’ Accelerated Recovery Terrifies the NFL
The Kansas City Chiefs’ 2026 season—and the entire AFC landscape—could look dramatically different if Patrick Mahomes returns healthy and ready from Week 1. Already one of the most dominant quarterbacks in league history, a fully recovered Mahomes with an extra offseason to refine mechanics and chemistry with his receivers would make Kansas City an immediate Super Bowl favorite once again.
Glazer’s report has sent shockwaves through the league, with many analysts and fans now bracing for the Chiefs to reload aggressively around their star QB. The update reinforces Mahomes’ reputation as an outlier in terms of durability, mental toughness, and recovery speed—qualities that have defined his career and separated him from his peers.
As rehab continues and training camp approaches, all eyes will remain on Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. If Glazer’s assessment holds true, the NFL should indeed be very afraid of what’s coming in 2026.
