Green Bay Packers: Romeo Doubs named free agent target that “makes sense” for NFC rival

The Green Bay Packers are preparing to see most of their unrestricted free agents leave the team in 2026. The good news, though, is that they are likely going to receive some excellent compensation picks as a result of these players signing elsewhere.

One of the players that is widely believed to be on his way out of Green Bay is wide receiver Romeo Doubs. Due to the presence of other young and more affordable wide receivers on the roster, the Packers likely are not going to bring him back.

Undoubtedly, Doubs is going to have a number of other NFL teams interested in his services, and one of them may be one of Green Bay’s biggest NFC rivals.

Last season, Doubs had 55 receptions for 724 yards and six touchdowns. He either led or tied for the team lead in each of these three receiving categories.

While he may not be a number one wide receiver, Doubs is a capable second option that any NFL team would love to have on their team. Matt Barrows, who covers the San Francisco 49ers for The Athletic, thinks that he would be a sensible signing for them:

Makes sense: “Doubs. [Mike] Evans would fill the need for a big-play X receiver. But he’ll be 33 before Week 1 and is coming off an injury-shortened season. Doubs is seven years younger, should be a little cheaper and is already well-versed in the Shanahan offense, especially catching passes over the crowded middle.”

Indeed, the offense that Matt LaFleur runs in Green Bay is similar to the Shanahan offense, so Doubs would have no issues fitting in and catching on with the 49ers. He would have the benefit of playing with tight end George Kittle (if he can remain healthy).

Additionally, Doubs is from California, so signing with San Francisco would allow him to play much closer to home.

The former fourth round pick is ending his Packers tenure with career totals of 202 receptions for 2,424 yards, and 21 touchdowns.
