The Las Vegas Raiders finished with a 3-14 record last season. With them being so bad, it led to them getting the number one overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Quarterback Geno Smith had a terrible year for them. He completed 67.4% of his passes for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions.

Smith is 35 years old. Well, Dianna Russini of the Athletic recently reported on Twitter, “NEWS: The Raiders are set to release veteran QB Geno Smith, sources say. Las Vegas acquired Smith in an offseason trade with Seattle last year. Now, the 35-year-old finds himself on the open market after just one year as a Raider.” With this being the case, it appears as if the Raiders have their sights set on Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the number one overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Las Vegas fans are excited about the future.

There are a lot of Las Vegas fans who are thrilled about the team releasing Smith. This is what some of the fans had to say about it on Twitter:
GEN O NO MORE IN VEGAS Raiders cutting 35yo Geno Smith after 1 disastrous year. Traded a 3rd for him last offseason… now eating $18.5M dead money to save $8M. Classic Raider chaos.

Is it just me or does a Geno move always happen the Friday before free agency??

Geno Smith’s Raiders stint is already over, just one year in Las Vegas, and the veteran QB is back on the market.

Can’t spell Geno without “gone”

There is no doubt that this Raiders fanbase is thrilled over Smith being released. This will probably not be the last stop for him in his NFL career however. Teams like the New York Jets, the Cleveland Browns, and some others could potentially be interested in trading for him. Las Vegas will be getting a new leader at the quarterback position for the 2026 NFL season and beyond as well here.
