A San Antonio man is in critical condition after being shot in the Frost Bank Center parking lot following Thursday’s San Antonio Spurs-Detroit Pistons game, according to authorities.
Suspect Isaac Anthony Jimenez, 47, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said during a press conference. Jimenez is accused of opening fire after crashing his car into another vehicle and trying to flee the scene.
Bystanders, including the shooting victim, tried to stop Jimenez from leaving, at which point he opened fire, according to the Salazar. The shooing victim, whom the sheriff described as a 48-year-old San Antonio, man was struck at least twice in the upper body.
“At worst, this was going to be a minor crash,” Salazar said. “Stick around, do the right thing and handle your business. These guys are not young teenagers. He’s certainly old enough to know better, the suspect. But stick around and handle your minor crash. What’s the worst that’s going to happen? He escalated this situation and the victim tried to do the right thing and get involved — this guy pulls a gun and then tries to kill somebody.”
Salazar said his office will execute a search warrant at Jimenez’s address as part of its investigation.
“That’s just way beyond what this needs to be,” the sheriff said of the shooting.
