The Miami Dolphins are deemed as the best fit for a free agent quarterback
Free agency is less than a week away, and the Miami Dolphins will have to make some important decisions. Despite having a limited salary cap, Miami still needs to find a quarterback for the 2026 season. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa remains on the team’s roster; however, theexpectation is that will change in the coming weeks.
Rookie Quinn Ewers will also likely be involved in the competition for the starting job, after starting the final three games of the 2026 season. Throughout this process, Miami has been linked with a majority of the quarterbacks that are set to hit the open market.
However, one name stands out due to his high-ceiling and familiarity with the Dolphins.
As free agency nears, the Dolphins have been constantly gettinglinked with quarterback Malik Willis. Willis is a former third round pick who struggled with the Titans, but showed off his potential once he was traded for the Packers. However, as he was Jordan Love’s backup, Willis started only three games over the past two seasons.
Miami Dolphins Are the Best Fit for Malik Willis
Despite this, he’s been seen as the top free agent quarterback andSpotrac projects him to sign a two year, $71 million contract. Now, a new ESPN article listed the Dolphins and Willis as one of the best potential player-team fits. They wrote, “With new leadership in Miami, the club could move on from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. New coach Jeff Hafley and new GM Jon-Eric Sullivan know Willis well from their shared time in Green Bay, and Willis could slot in as the new starter under coordinator Bobby Slowik.
Let’s envision a scheme built around motion/movement, with play-action elements woven in; that would set up Willis well as a thrower, and the QB run game would generate conflict for opposing defenses. Willis’ development in Green Bay creates upside for the Dolphins.”
Additionally, they also listed Willis as one of the top quarterbacks available. They wrote, “A third-round pick of the Titans in 2022, Willis did little in Tennessee but thrived as a backup to Jordan Love in Green Bay over the past two seasons. He’s a dynamic runner and an improved passer who’s still only 26 years old and should do quite well as the top player in a thin quarterback market. In the era of “QB rehab,” where once-touted prospects land with good coaching staffs and retool for a strong second act the way Sam Darnold did this past season with the Seahawks, Willis is going to appeal to teams looking for short- and long-term answers.”
Competition for Malik Willis
Unfortunately, the Dolphins will likely not be the only team who will pursue Willis. The Arizona Cardinals, who recently announced they are releasing Kyler Murray, could also participate in the Malik Willis Sweepstakes.
ESPN’s Jordan Reid wrote of his belief that Willis will sign with the Cardinals. He wrote, “Quarterback Malik Willis will sign with the Cardinals and continue his trajectory toward stardom. Jordan Love’s backup with the Packers the past two seasons, Willis displayed impressive growth as a passer and is a dynamic runner. The Cardinals will move quickly to get him.”
The Dolphins missing out on Willis could result inMiami pursuing former Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray.
