Jeremy Sochan joins the New York Knicks after the San Antonio Spurs released him.

The New York Knicks picked up Jeremy Sochan in the buyout market after the San Antonio Spurs cut ties with the veteran forward.

So far, Sochan’s run in New York has been on the quiet side. He hasn’t had much of a role through his first few weeks with the team.

Recently, a video of Sochan going through warmups made some noise on social media. In the clip, the veteran forward was putting up routine threes at Madison Square Garden. NBA fans suggested his shot looked off.

When a popular San Antonio Spurs-centric account reposted the video, it garnered over one million views with hundreds of comments.

One of those commenters was Spurs forward Julian Champagnie. Sochan’s former teammate came to the Knicks player’s defense.

“Stop reposting this s***!!” Champagnie wrote. “Let him be.”

Sochan, 22, and Champagnie, 24, were teammates on the Spurs since 2022. The former landed in San Antonio as a top 10 draft pick. As for Champagnie, he started his career as a two-way player for the Philadelphia 76ers before signing with the Spurs midway through his rookie season.

So far, Sochan has appeared in eight games for the Knicks since joining the team. He is seeing the court for just 5.1 minutes per game.

The numbers do suggest he’s struggling with his shot. Typically a 46% shooter from the field, Sochan is making just 33% of his attempts with the Knicks. In fairness, his limited time has him averaging just 1.1 shots per game.

Prior to landing with the Knicks this season, Sochan was in the middle of his fourth season with the Spurs. He appeared in 28 games for San Antonio, seeing the court off the bench for 12.8 minutes per game.

Posting averages of 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.0 assists, it was becoming clear that Sochan was struggling to carve out a role for himself in Texas this deep into his run. The Spurs bought out the 22-year-old veteran, giving him a chance to pick up and flourish elsewhere.

The Knicks Offer A Tough Position

New York can be a good opportunity for a player who wants to contribute to playoff basketball right away. For Sochan, New York is a tough spot, though.

Sochan might be a veteran, carrying three full seasons’ worth of experience, but he doesn’t have any playoff experience. For the Knicks, that might make them hesitant to roll him out when the games start to count for more.

That’s not to say that Sochan won’t contribute to the Knicks’ run this year, but it could be a reason why he might struggle to get on the floor later on in the process.

When the 2025-2026 season ends, Sochan will wrap up his one-year deal with the Knicks. The veteran will hit the market as an unrestricted free agent in the summertime for the first time in his career.
