Everything you need to know about the FA Cup rules for Wolves vs Liverpool
Who, when, where and what time: Wolves will face Liverpool for the second time this week in a fifth-round FA Cup clash. This game will take place on Friday, March 6, at Molineux, with a kick-off time of 8pm.
VAR implementation: For this fifth-round encounter, VAR will be in full operation to assist the on-field officials with clear and obvious errors. While the FA previously limited technology in earlier rounds, the fifth round utilises the system across the board.
Extra-time and penalty procedures: If the scores are level after 90 minutes, the match will proceed to 30 minutes of extra-time. Should the teams remain deadlocked following this additional period, a penalty shootout will take place immediately to determine who progresses to the quarter-finals.
Scrapping of replays: The controversial decision to get rid of replays was introduced from the first round proper onwards in the 2024/25 season. This means the tie must be settled on the night at Molineux, as the traditional format was scrapped to help alleviate fixture congestion for clubs competing in expanded European formats.
Substitution quotas and windows: Managers may name nine players on the bench and make a maximum of five substitutions during normal time. These changes must be made within three distinct opportunities - with half-time not counting as one - though an additional sixth substitute is granted to both teams if the match moves into extra-time.
The new eight-second goalkeeper rule: A significant trial rule for the 2025/26 season restricts goalkeepers from holding the ball for more than eight seconds. If a keeper exceeds this limit, the referee will award a corner kick to the opposition rather than the traditional indirect free-kick, with officials providing a visible hand-signal countdown for the final five seconds.
UK television and streaming: The match will be broadcast live in the United Kingdom on TNT Sports 1 and BBC One, with coverage beginning well before the 8pm kick-off. TNT subscribers can also stream the action via the discovery+ app, which currently serves as the primary digital home for their content on smart TVs and mobile devices.
UK radio and audio coverage: For those on the move, national radio commentary will be available on BBC Radio 5 Live and talkSPORT. Additionally, both clubs offer local audio via their official apps, with Liverpool providing Matchday Live and Wolves broadcasting through Wolves TV, while local BBC radio will also be in attendance.
Latest team news and injuries: Liverpool will be without long-term absentees Giovanni Leoni and Wataru Endo, while playmaker Florian Wirtz has been a doubt with a back issue but could return for some minutes off the bench. Wolves enter the game with high morale following their 2-1 league win over the Reds on Tuesday, though both managers may rotate their squads slightly given the quick four-day turnaround.
