Why Buffalo Bills are releasing cornerback Taron Johnson after 8 seasons

The [Buffalo Bills](https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/buffalo-bills) are reportedly making a significant cut.

According to [NFL Network's Ian Rapoport](https://x.com/RapSheet/status/2029981492357525589), the Bills are releasing veteran cornerback Taron Johnson after eight seasons with the team.

A slot cornerback, Johnson has been a reliable member of the Bills' defense during his career. In 2025, he surrendered a completion rate of 63.6% and a passer rating of 94.7.

Why Bills are releasing Taron Johnson

-------------------------------------

Rapoport notes in his report that the reason behind the release has to do with the Bills' defensive scheme change under new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.

Plain and simple, the slot cornerback spot has far less less significance in Leonhard's defense than it did in former head coach Sean McDermott's.

So, the Bills were either going to move Johnson to safety or release or trade him. Clearly Buffalo chose the latter and will release him.
