Chelsea will get the chance to freshen up their ranks when the summer transfer window is open for business

Chelsea thrashed Aston Villa 4-1 at Villa Park in their latest Premier League game. Joao Pedro scored a hat-trick in the Midlands. Meanwhile, Cole Palmer also managed to get himself on the scoresheet.

Liam Rosenior’s side are looking to cement their position in the Champions League places. They are back in action this weekend as they aim to keep their momentum going. The London outfit face an FA Cup trip to ambitious Championship club Wrexham.

Chelsea target Club Brugge defender Joel Ordóñez - along with Liverpool

According to SportsBoom, Chelsea are keen on a move for Club Brugge defender Joel Ordóñez. The report adds that his price tag is around the £40m mark. Liverpool and PSG have also been mentioned as potential suitors.

The Blues have the opportunity to freshen up their ranks this summer with some new faces. Rosenior will be eager to put more of his own stamp on the squad with some reinforcements in the next transfer window. The ex-Hull City and Strasbourg man was picked as their replacement for Enzo Maresca and has made a largely positive impression so far at the helm.

Ordóñez, 21, is being tipped for a bright future in the game. He is exactly the sort of young player who would flourish under the guidance of Rosenior. Therefore, Chelsea need to ensure that they beat competition from elsewhere to land his signature ahead of next season if possible.

Why Club Brugge star Joel Ordóñez would be ideal summer recruit for Chelsea

Chelsea could see Ordóñez as someone to boost their defensive department. If he joined, he would give them more competition and depth at the back. In addition, he would give them something different to call upon.

The Ecuador international, who has 14 caps to his name, made the switch to Club Brugge back in 2022 and hasn’t looked back since. He has become one of their most prized assets and they will face a real battle to keep hold of him down the line amid attention from elsewhere. The prospect has made 113 appearances for them in all competitions, 32 of which have come in this campaign, and he has scored six goals from the back.

Ordóñez started his career in South America at Independiente. He rose up through their ranks before breaking into their first-team as a teenager. The Guayaquil-born man then made the decision to leave for Europe and that move has worked out well for him.

Liverpool’s links to Ordóñez are a worry for Chelsea. The Reds need to find a replacement for if Ibrahima Konate leaves when his deal expires in June. He is due to become a free agent when this term ends and is yet to put pen-to-paper on an extension.

Therefore, Arne Slot’s side may well be able to offer Ordóñez regular game time. Their skipper Virgil van Dijk is also not getting any younger which means they have to start thinking about potential candidates to step into his shoes. His contract runs out in 2027.
