Former Ohio State star Taylor Decker asks for release from Detroit Lions

Just weeks after announcing his plan to return to the Motor City for an 11th season, former Ohio State standout Taylor Decker has officially asked for his release from the Detroit Lions. The veteran left tackle shared the news on his Instagram account, citing an inability to find "common ground" with the organization during recent discussions about his return.

"Things change, 145 games started, 3 playoff appearances, 2 division titles, a decade carrying the shield," Decker wrote. "I fully intended to do it once again, but my time as a Lion is coming to an end... I decided to request my release. I am opting for a clean and amicable close to what has been such a beautiful 10 years going to war as a Lion."

Ohio State's 2025 college football season came to an end in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal. The Buckeyes will not repeat as national champions. Since being selected No. 16 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, Decker has been the undisputed anchor of Detroit's offensive line throughout his entire career. Playing left tackle, Decker has played all 140 regular-season games — 145 when factoring in the NFL playoffs — with the Lions, providing much-needed stability to the franchise. He navigated the lean years and became a key part of the Lions' recent culture shift, helping lead them to two division titles and three playoff appearances.

Decker also earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2024 and built a reputation as an elite pass-blocker. Beyond his blocking skills, he even made his mark in the Lions' record books as an eligible receiver, catching two career touchdown passes during his 10-year tenure. By choosing to hit the open market, the 32-year-old immediately becomes one of the most highly sought-after blindside protectors available this offseason.

Before moving on to the NFL, Decker was a key player in the trenches for the Buckeyes. From 2012 to 2015, the Vandalia, Ohio native appeared in 54 games, starting 42 of them.

Decker's legacy in Columbus is marked by the 2014 season. As the starting left tackle, he played 1,034 offensive snaps, creating openings for running back Ezekiel Elliott and protecting the edge during the Scarlet and Gray's run to the first College Football Playoff national championship. He returned for his senior season in 2015, raising his level of play to elite status. Decker was named the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year and received Consensus All-American honors during his final college season, confirming his status as a first-round NFL prospect.
