Andy Robertson and Rio Ngumoha spearhead FA Cup redemption: Liverpool player ratings vs Wolves

Liverpool have found redemption against Wolves, with Andy Robertson and Mo Salah leading the charge to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

After a wildly disappointing league performance at Molineux earlier this week, the Reds put things right with a convincing cup display.

Liverpool started much better on Friday night but couldn’t find an opening before the break.

It didn’t take long after play resumed for the tie to be settled, with two rapid-fire strikes from Robertson and Salah taking the game out of reach. Curtis Jones put a bow on the win with a stunning strike but Wolves stole a consolation goal at the end. 3-1.

Liverpool player ratings vs Wolves

Alisson Becker – 6

Routine performance from the Brazilian, until injury-time. Liverpool can’t stop conceding late.

Dominik Szoboszlai – 6

Szoboszlai was at right-back for Liverpool yet again, putting on a typically solid display in his less preferred role. It does feel a waste to have him so far back, but we have to accept the importance of rotation during this hectic period.

Joe Gomez – 6

Stephen Warnock praised Gomez for his in-possession play, and he was his usual steady self on the ball. Wolves couldn’t get a sniff.

Virgil van Dijk – 7

The same praise applies to Van Dijk, who made sure not to let Tolu Arokodare get the better of him again. It was a comfortable evening.

Andy Robertson – 8

What a game from Robertson, marking his return to the lineup with a goal and an assist. Milos Kerkez may now be the undisputed first choice, but the Scotsman just proved he can still bring a lot to the table.

Ryan Gravenberch – 6

A more encouraging Gravenberch performance which can hopefully be the catalyst for a turnaround in form. He was back to his old tricks, driving forward with the ball and getting into great attacking positions.

Alexis Mac Allister – 6

We got a proper scare with Mac Allister going over on his ankle in the closing stages. Hopefully nothing serious. As for the performance, he and his fellow midfielders redeemed themselves against a quality Wolves midfield.

Curtis Jones – 8

What a hit. Jones has been a divisive figure in the fanbase following some flat performances, but this goal will be a massive confidence boost. He led the press and held down the number 10 position.

Mohamed Salah – 7

After a frustrating first 45, Salah came out swinging in the second half. He was in the right place to convert Liverpool’s second and was a reliable outlet on the right flank. Much more like it.

Rio Ngumoha – 8

Ngumoha’s long-awaited start did not disappoint. The 17-year-old was the brightest of Liverpool’s attackers and had Jackson Tchatchoua on toast all night. A constant threat.

Cody Gakpo – 6

Gakpo led the line and while he didn’t get on the scoresheet, his all-around play lessened the effect of Hugo Ekitike’s absence considerably.

Substitutions

Florian Wirtz – 6

The German’s 70th-minute introduction was a welcome sight for the travelling support. Liverpool have missed Wirtz in his short absence. It wasn’t a loud performance, but he showed his usual composure and playmaking from out on the left.

Jeremie Frimpong – 6

The usual from Frimpong. Rapid on the right and always looking to get to the byline.

Ibrahima Konate – 5

Came on for Van Dijk to see out the game.

Trey Nyoni – 7

Replaced Mac Allister after his knock. Was seriously impressive in his short stint, showing he can contribute meaningfully in the FA Cup.

Kieran Morrison – 5

Never going to complain when Morrison gets a run in the first team. An exciting prospect for the future.
