Liam Rosenior on Goalkeeper Policy After Dropping Sanchez for Jorgensen

Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior has explained his policy on rotating goalkeepers. He said that neither Robert Sanchez nor Filip Jorgensen is guaranteed the number one spot at Stamford Bridge. The head coach switched Sanchez out for Jorgensen ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Villa Park on Wednesday, and the move worked out well, as the Blues won easily, 4-1, against Aston Villa.

Rosenior made his choice after Sanchez had a tough game in Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on March 1. The Spanish goalkeeper had a hard time in goal as the Gunners beat Chelsea, which hurt their chances of finishing in the top four. The Blues are currently in fifth place in the Premier League with 48 points.

After the win at Villa Park, Rosenior talked about how he handled the goalkeeping situation:

“For me, genuinely I look at the goalkeeper differently, it is on each game. I know traditionally when people pick a goalkeeper then he is the (new) no.1 but that’s not the case. Filip (Jorgensen) has been waiting and I thought he took his opportunity really well.”

Jorgensen showed his manager that he could be calm and confident against Aston Villa. The 23-year-old Dane, who came to Chelsea from Villarreal, had been patiently waiting for his chance behind the established Sanchez this season. When Chelsea play Wrexham next, it will be interesting to see who gets the nod as the goalkeeper.

Chelsea Gets Ready For FA Cup Match With Wrexham

Chelsea’s next game is against Wrexham in the FA Cup, which should be an interesting clash between two sides with American owners. The Welsh club has had an amazing rise through the English football pyramid since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought it. They will be excited to play against a Premier League side in the Boehly-owned Chelsea.

The match also presents Rosenior and Chelsea with an interesting problem regarding their goalkeeping rotation. Since he has said that he will look at each game on its own, the FA Cup match could give either Sanchez or Jorgensen another chance to make their case. People expect Chelsea to move past Wrexham easily, but cup football has a way of surprising people, and the Blues can’t afford to take that lightly.
