March 6 was a celebratory day for former New York Giants quarterback and New Jersey native Tommy DeVito, as the ex-fan favorite made news with a contract extension ahead of NFL free agency.
DeVito served as QB depth behind New England Patriots rising star Drake Maye in 2025. Apparently, he did enough to earn a nice paycheck, with ESPN Patriots beat reporter Mike Reiss and insider Adam Schefter reporting that DeVito and the Patriots “agreed to a two-year contract with a maximum value of $7.4 million, including $2 million guaranteed.”
“The Patriots could have tendered DeVito an offer at either the right of first refusal ($3.52 million), second-round level ($5.7 million) or first-round level ($8 million),” Reiss noted within the article. “Instead, the sides worked out the two-year deal, with DeVito forgoing the chance to be an unrestricted free agent in 2027. The base value of DeVito’s two-year deal with the Patriots is expected to be $4.4 million, sources said.”
DeVito served as New England’s third quarterback during last year’s surprise AFC title run. The backup was veteran Joshua Dobbs.
With Dobbs still on the Patriots’ roster heading into 2026, DeVito is expected to continue on in that role. Although he could get an opportunity to compete for the backup job this summer.
Reiss relayed that head coach Mike Vrabel was impressed by DeVito’s ability to pick up the offensive system without a training camp in New England. So, it’s possible that the former UDFA success story could take another step with more time learning from offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
Vrabel also seemed to like DeVito’s hard work and initiative, as Reiss wrote that the head coach appreciated that “DeVito spent additional time each Monday working with some of the team’s younger receivers, especially those on the practice squad.”
Giants Have Come a Long Way Since Tommy DeVito

DeVito was the talk of New York City after leading the Giants to three straight victories as a rookie. Over that span of games, the undrafted prospect put up passer ratings of 137.7, 103.9, and 113.9.
Having said that, his QBRs told a different story, with two terrible scores (33.5 and 8.8) and one elite performance (82.3 QBR versus the Green Bay Packers).
Following the Monday Night Football magic against Green Bay, DeVito fell short against the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles. He then failed to recapture the magic in year two.
Obviously, the Giants have come a long way since DeVito-mania. At the time, there was actually a contingent of fans who thought the youngster from New Jersey might be the long-term answer at QB.
Then reality set in, and DeVito’s limitations became clear.
In 2024, DeVito struggled when called upon. It wasn’t all his fault but the results were ugly, and the buzz surrounding the Jersey kid fizzled.
In the end, the Giants brought in three quarterbacks to overhaul their QB room in 2025. DeVito was given a minor opportunity to compete for a role throughout the spring and summer, but it never really felt like a fair competition.
After rookie first-rounder Jaxson Dart emerged, DeVito was cut. He opted to sign with the Patriots’ practice squad not long after.
