Tag-and-Trade Path Emerges for Breece Hall in Potential Jets-Broncos Deal

The New York Jets still have levers to pull.

Heavy.com’s Max Dible proposed a tag-and-trade scenario that could make sense for both sides.

New York Jets receive: a 2026 third-round pick (No. 74 overall) and a 2026 seventh-round pick (No. 246 overall)

Denver Broncos receive: running back Breece Hall

“The Denver Broncos need a legit No. 1 running back, and Breece Hall is precisely that. The Jets franchised Hall with the likely intent of trading him, and while $14.3 million is an overpay in 2026, the Broncos can work out a more team-friendly long-term deal after getting Hall onto the roster,” Dible explained.

“Pairing one of the NFL’s best RBs with one of its best defenses has made sense since football first became a professional sport. Beyond that, Hall is a good pass-catcher out of the backfield and uniquely skilled to help Denver QB Bo Nix, whose injury may have cost the Broncos a trip to the Super Bowl in February,” Dible added.

The Jets originally planned on placing the $11.3 million transition tag on Hall. However, they pivoted their decision-making after receiving new information at the 2026 NFL Combine.

“I think the Jets stretched it a little bit there. I think they got word that maybe the Broncos were going to make a big run at Breece Hall. The Jets wanted no part of that doubt, so they effectively eliminated him from the free agent market by going with the franchise tag,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini explained on the “Flight Deck” podcast.

If Denver was interested in signing Hall a week ago, you’d have to figure they’d be willing to listen to a potential tag-and-trade offer.

At the NFL trade deadline last year, the Jets and fellow AFC West squad, the Kansas City Chiefs, were reportedly close to striking a trade. The Jets wanted a third-round draft choice for Hall, but KC was only willing to give up a fourth-rounder.

Neither side caved in, and Hall remained a member of the green and white. This Dible trade idea would give the Jets what they wanted and a little bit more.

Could a Tag-and-Trade Actually Be in the Cards?

The Jets have franchise-tagged Hall for the 2026 season, but that doesn’t guarantee he will be here for the long term. If the team wanted, they could still, in theory, tag-and-trade him to another club.

ESPN radio host Jake Asman asked Cimini on his podcast if he could envision a potential tag-and-trade scenario.

“Ordinarily, I would say no, they will keep him, but let’s look at the past history of this regime. I mean, they signed Sauce Gardner to a monster deal in July, and they traded him in November. So I don’t think you can rule anything out,” Cimini explained on “The Jake Asman Show.”

“Do I think the Jets want to trade him? No. I do not believe the Jets want to trade him. The type of offense that they want to run is going to be run through the running game. Let’s face it, it’s not going to be a quarterback-driven offense because they are not gonna have a good quarterback this year. So it’s going to be run through Breece Hall. So I do not believe the Jets want to trade him. I think the only way it would get to that point is if Breece Hall pulls a Jamal Adams. [He] goes crazy and makes a lot of noise and says, ‘I want out.’ But like I said, never say never with the Jets,” Cimini added.
