Former NFL CB Says Steelers Are A ‘Good Fit’ For Stefon Diggs

There’s a whole host of names out there at the wide receiver position. The Pittsburgh Steelers have several options to choose from during the first couple days of the draft. In free agency, there are several young candidates who would make sense. And with Mike Evans and Tyreek Hill on the market, there are stars from years ago as well. Another one is Stefon Diggs, who’s expected to be released by New England at the start of the new league year.

Diggs is an interesting idea, and it’s not clear what type of market he might have, or what he might cost. But to former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel Sr., he’d be a good fit in Pittsburgh. And Asante also thinks he’d work well with Aaron Rodgers, who the Steelers want to bring back at quarterback.

“I think Pittsburgh, if Aaron Rodgers decides to come back. That’s a whole ‘nother situation in itself. But if Aaron Rodgers decides to come back, if Stefon Diggs signs with Pittsburgh, I think that could be a good fit. They could connect and work really well together right off the rip. You know, a lot of egos with those two guys playing together. But yeah, I think that’s one of the places he can possibly fit,” Samuel said Thursday on his Say What Needs To Be Said show.

“Ego” is certainly a word that could describe Diggs. While he might not clash with Rodgers, who was a good teammate last year in Pittsburgh, the Steelers probably wouldn’t bring Diggs in with hopes of him being a mentor. That’s a route some want the Steelers to take, since they’ll likely be drafting a young receiver or two.

However, on the field, Stefon Diggs still makes an impact. Despite turning 32 last year and coming off a knee injury the year prior, Diggs had a great 2025 season. He caught 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, the seventh time in his career he’s reached at least 1,000 receiving yards.

With Diggs, there are some complications. He recently pled not guilty to felony strangulation and other criminal charges from a dispute with his personal chef. We’ll have to see what transpires there. But for obvious reasons, that can complicate his NFL future and his market as he tries to find his next team.

Ultimately, the talent is there. But Stefon Diggs is a risky choice. If he’s expensive, it might not be worth it, especially with Diggs turning 33 next year. His legal problems may impact his NFL future, as well. However, if Diggs comes for the right price, he absolutely still can produce at the NFL level. In a deep pool of options at receiver this offseason, he might be someone to add to the list.
