NFL free agency: 3 potential landing spots for Detroit Lions legend Taylor Decker

NFL free agency already had many names that were going to be interesting to watch, but the release or planned releases of other players currently under contract is going to make it even more so. For example, it was reported today that Taylor Decker requested his release from the Detroit Lions.

β€œI fully intended to do it once again, but my time as a Lion is coming to an end,” Deckerwrote on Instagram. β€œIn the weeks since notifying the team of my return there have been numerous discussions. Many of which were a surprise to me, and we could not find a common ground. Therefore I decided to request my release.”

As he has already committed to playing at least one more season in the NFL, there will be multiple teams interested in signing him.

1. Taylor Decker could reunite with Ben Johnson on the Chicago Bears

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell talks to offensive tackle Taylor Decker (68) as he walks off the field due to an injury during the second half against Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024.

One obvious destination for Decker in free agency is the Chicago Bears. Not only do they need a left tackle, but Ben Johnson, the former Lions offensive coordinator, is their head coach.

Additionally, the Bears are an up-and-coming team that is coming off an NFC North division title. After spending 10 years in Detroit, Decker could remain in the division and chase a Super Bowl.

2. The Kansas City Chiefs need a left tackle

One of the least surprising moves so far this off-season was the Kansas City Chiefs deciding to release their starting left tackle, Jawaan Taylor. Indeed, Kansas City has multiple questions right now, including who will begin the season as their starting quarterback while Patrick Mahomes recovers from a torn ACL.

Bringing in Decker is not a long-term solution. After all, he flirted with retirement this off-season. But he could provide a solid presence at left tackle for a year while the team tries to climb back into Super Bowl contention.

3. The Atlanta Falcons need just about everything

One NFL franchise that has needs just about everywhere is the Atlanta Falcons. They still are not sure who their quarterback is going to be, and they desperately need some improvements on both the offensive and defensive line.

Their new general manager, Ian Cunningham, came from Chicago, so he has gotten to see what Decker can do up close and personal.
