Ex-Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has suggested that his former club may consider an approach for Man City goalkeeper James Trafford.

Blues no.1 Robert Sanchez has come under scrutiny for his performances, and Johnson says the London club may look to the Cityzens for a solution, having had success signing players from the Etihad in the past:

“James Trafford to Chelsea? It worked with Cole Palmer, didn’t it? Even that one at the time was a surprise to me, because I’ve never really seen him play before, to be honest. And the same with the goalkeeper, I’ve not seen him play.”

“But in terms of could it come off? Absolutely, it can. It’d be unlikely, I guess, because it’s a big role to be the number one goalkeeper at Chelsea. You normally need a lot of experience, and you can only get experience by gaining experience, obviously.”

Trafford has been linked to Chelsea before

The 23-year-old was on the radar of several other Premier League clubs during his spell at Burnley before City decided to re-sign him.

Following the Clarets’ relegation in the summer of 2024, Newcastle and Chelsea were said to have considered making bids, only to be put off by Trafford‘s asking price.

The Magpies made a second move last year, only to be beaten to the punch by Pep Guardiola’s side.

What has the keeper said about his future at Man City?

Trafford revealed last month that he was unaware that the Cityzens were plotting a move for another goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma:

“I didn’t expect the situation [with Donnarumma] to happen, but it happened, so just get on with it. So it’s happened, so I work very hard every day and see what happens, give it my best shot.”

Trafford then hinted that he may consider his future at the end of the season now that he knows he will be Donnarumma’s understudy:

“I’ve obviously got a contract, so don’t know what happens next season. I just know that I’ll just take it a day at a time and try and improve.”
