Liverpool’s veterans show their worth as media debate “prodigious” Ngumoha role

It’s fair to say the media were more praiseworthy of Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Wolves than they were three days earlier!

Arne Slot earned a vital win for both himself and his side on Friday night, booking a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Here’s the best of the media reaction on a positive night for Liverpool.

This was much more like it from the Reds…

On X, David Lynch felt there was more “zip” to Liverpool’s play compared to on Tuesday:

“Arne Slot might argue that the only difference between tonight and Tuesday was that Liverpool scored the first goal when they did, opening up the game as a result, but they seemed to me to want to pass the ball with more zip earlier.

“Either way, a deserved and important win.”

The *Telegraph*‘s Mike McGrath was another who lauded Liverpool’s win, which was inspired by legendary duo Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah:

“This was a huge contrast to the defeat here at Wolves earlier in the week when Slot’s team lost control of the match and dropped points in their bid for the top five.

“Slot will probably have to utilise his squad like he did here to cope with the Cup and the Champions League as well as trying to climb the table.

“But in his veterans, he has players who know their way around managing this part of the season.”

John Brewin of the Guardian was another who focused on the pair:

“This time around, Liverpool made no mistake at Molineux.

“They remain on the road to Wembley, and thanks to two players signed in 2017, two time-honoured club legends with now uncertain futures.

“Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah scored the goals that took the game away from Wolves to soothe the pain of Tuesday’s Premier League defeat.”

Mohamed Salah has now scored more goals for Liverpool than anyone has ever scored for Manchester United.

The *Independent*‘s Richard Jolly described it as a “cathartic” victory for Slot’s men:

“There was a cathartic element to victory in the rematch with the Premier League’s bottom club.

[…]

“So Liverpool advanced. This is their best chance of a trophy this season and it may be both Salah and Robertson’s last year on Merseyside.

“For each, there might be a silver lining.”

Stop that Andy Robertson ?

Rio Ngumoha earned special praise after an excellent display

Rio Ngumoha FA Cup Wolves. March 6, 2026. PA

Daniel Marsh of the Mirror enjoyed a vibrant showing from Ngumoha:

“The prodigious attacker looked by the far the most likely player in a red shirt to make something happen for large parts of the game, outdoing Cody Gakpo and Salah in the first half.

“At the age of just 17, Ngumoha’s end product will fluctuate and there were moments where the final moment didn’t quite match the fancy footwork which wouldn’t look out of place on a Saturday night on the BBC, but he made things happen – even when he was doubled up on at times with Wolves‘ back five.

“It’s clear to see why fans are desperate to see more and more of the talented teenager.

“And while nobody will want to put too much on the young man’s shoulders too soon, Cody Gakpo‘s less than stellar form on the left prong of Liverpool’s attack could mean we see more and more of Ngumoha before the end of the season…”

Ciaran Foreman of the Daily Mail talked up Ngumoha’s chances of starting against Galatasaray:

“Now, I don’t think Arne Slot will start Rio Ngumoha away at Galatasaray on Tuesday in the Champions League.

“But should he? The 17-year-old was absolutely electric tonight.

“I’d certainly be looking to start him against Tottenham next Sunday if he doesn’t start in Turkey.”

Mo Stewart said that Wolves fans clearly knew what a threat the 17-year-old was:

“The biggest compliment for Rio Ngumoha has been the reaction of the Wolves fans every time he is thwarted.”

Finally, Andy Jones of The Athletic assessed a hugely promising performance:

“From the opening minutes, he was incisive, positive and direct whenever he got possession, and he was the away side’s standout player by a distance.

“It was telling that his team-mates were looking to feed the ball to him as much as possible, and he provided a constant threat. He linked well, too, with Robertson, who provided him support from left-back.

[…]

“It was another exciting performance from the youngster.”
