'Just not enough': Danny Murphy makes Arne Slot sack claim after Liverpool beat Wolves

Arne Slot might have guided Liverpool to a win over Wolves in the FA Cup but Danny Murphy believes it could be trophies or bust for the Dutchman.

Slot’s first season was a huge success as Liverpool won the Premier League at a canter.

But with retaining the title out of the picture, Slot has been under pressure and according to former midfielder Danny Murphy, he has to win a trophy.

Danny Murphy claims Arne Slot could be sacked if he doesn’t win a trophy

Murphy was on hand to watch Liverpool live at Molineux and in the end, it was a good performance.

However, speaking after the game, Murphy lamented some of Slot’s signings and insisted that the FA Cup has to be targeted or Slot could face the chop.

“Two out of the five new signings have done well. Of the players who were there last season, only one or maybe two have played to the level. It’s just not enough,” Murphy told the BBC.

“All these factors have transpired together for this fall away that nobody anticipated. All you can do is try and rebuild and fight back and have some success by winning one of the cups.

“The Champions League is going to be more difficult, this is a realistic competition for Liverpool to win.

“When you’re at the top, even if you have a bad season for Liverpool you’re expected to win something.

“For Slot, he is really needing something positive to end this season to – I think – keep him in a job.”

It would seem harsh for Liverpool to remove Slot from his position given he delivered the league title last season but it’s clear the pressure is building.

As Murphy says here, the new signings just haven’t clicked as Slot would have hoped. He has been unlucky with the injury to Alexander Isak but big money signings like Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong have been far too inconsistent.

Hugo Ekitike has looked the part in the main and as a young man, he should improve. Likewise, teenager Italian defender Giovanni Leoni also looked good before injury.

Ultimately though, it’s results on the pitch that matter and while Liverpool might be good next season with these new players now fully bedded in, Slot knows the clock is ticking.

Winning the FA Cup would be massive and as Murphy suggests, could save his job.
