Aaron Jones Sr. #33 of the Minnesota Vikings looks on against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to address their backfield when the NFL season starts anew this month, and the perfect addition may have just fallen into their lap.

The team’s backfield struggled last season, one of the major impediments as their offense stalled and the Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade. While some insiders predict the Chiefs will address the position with their first-round draft pick, one analyst believes they could also target a recently released veteran back.

Chiefs Advised to Target Aaron Jones in Free Agency

Emory Hunt of CBS Sports believes the Chiefs could make a run at Aaron Jones, the 31-year-old running back who was recently released by the Minnesota Vikings. Jones has rushed for 7,626 yards in his career with 52 touchdowns, and could add some versatility to an offense that lacked that trait from the backfield in 2025.

“He (Aaron Jones) has what you still need to be functional as a running back throughout the entirety of your career, however long it is, it’s the vision,” Hunt said. “He still sees it rather well. Despite him being 31, you don’t lose that vision. He has that, and he has it in space, so he’ll be able to see it, and then he’ll be able to hit it as it’s opening up and being able to attack it downhill. So I just feel like that makes a lot of sense, whether they want to go old school or younger.”

Ed Easton Jr. of USA Today’s Chiefs Wire concurred, calling Jones an “ideal” addition for the Chiefs in free agency.

“Last season with the Minnesota Vikings, Jones had 132 carries for 548 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games,” Easton Jr. wrote. “Kansas City’s running game lacked the explosive play all season due to injuries, and big plays were rare at the position. Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco led the team in rushing, but each finished under 1,000 yards.”
