While Garrett just spent time supporting his girlfriend Chloe Kim at the Olympics, attending Cleveland Cavaliers games, getting pulled over for speeding for the 9th time, and finding time for an exclusive interview with Channel 5’s Camryn Justice, he reportedly hasn’t found time to speak with the Browns coaches and front office:
At his introductory press conference, new DC Mike Rutenberg noted that they have not spoken “face to face” but did not answer whether they’ve communicated at all (from the team’s media transcripts):
Q: How about Myles Garrett? Have you heard from Myles yet? Or have you guys connected in any way?
A: “We have not spoken face to face. We’ve both been traveling a lot, and I cannot wait to meet him and learn from him. Obviously, amazing amount of respect for him as a player and all the great things I’ve heard about him as a person.”
As seen last offseason, the Browns have no interest in moving on from Garrett. Now, with the new contract extension, Garrett also has a no-trade clause that limits the ability to trade him. Trading Garrett would also accelerate problems with the salary cap, doubling his cap charge to over $40 million for him not to play in Cleveland in 2026.
Garrett is currently signed through the 2030 season, when he will be 35 years old.
Is it possible that Garrett has just been busy? Certainly. There is nothing he and the team really need to discuss at this moment anyway. Is it possible that Garrett is still very frustrated by the losing done by the team and the lack of answers at quarterback? For sure, but he lacks leverage to force anything, as he found out last offseason.
For now, anything is possible with a dominant player on a team that has been anything but dominant during his time there. By the start of training camp, the lack of communication will likely be water under the bridge. For now, it is at least notable with NFL free agency opening in just a few days.
