Spanish media heap criticism onto Trent Alexander-Arnold after Celta Viga display

The former Liverpool player has endured a difficult debut season at Real Madrid.

Trent Alexander-Arnold brought to an end what many would call a fairytale career at his boyhood club last summer as he departed Liverpool for La Liga giants Real Madrid.

A system where he flourished in, with Jurgen Klopp providing the tactical protection to let him shine, Alexander-Arnold has failed to replicate the talent that made him a standout player for Liverpool, in a Los Blancos shirt.

The 27-year-old is now the target of his latest barrage of criticism after a shaky display against Celta Viga last night.

Real Madrid came away from the game with a 2-1 win, but it took a 95th minute winner from Aurélien Tchouaméni to give them all three points.

According to Marca, as cited by FootMercato, the full back was described as slow and lost as he was directly at fault for Celta Vigo’s equaliser.

“My God Trent, what a defensive performance on that goal! If you can even call it a defensive performance. Slow, poorly positioned, and ultimately lost in the box.”

“Whether he has the ball or not is a completely different story. He contributes a lot in attack, but he also penalises us a lot defensively, where he was incredibly weak.”

Harsh assessment, especially given that football is always a team sport, and Real Madrid have been up and down this season despite currently sitting just a point behind league leaders Barcelona.

Trent Alexander-Arnod suffered a significant hamstring injury at the beginning of autumn and then another muscle strain during the winter, disrupting his adjustment to life in Spain.

In 2025/26, he has managed 2 assists in 18 appearances in all competitions, remarkably low numbers for what we became accustomed to seeing at Liverpool.

However, he has currently worked his way ahead of Dani Carvajal, despite the veteran recently returning from injury.
