Pompey and Blackburn Rovers played out a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
Pompey suffered late stoppage-time heartbreak in their crucial Championship survival showdown against Blackburn Rovers.
Connor Ogilvie thought he gave Pompey a huge three points on 85 minutes after his powerful strike send the Fratton faithful into raptures.
But Rovers responded on 93 minutes with one-time Blues loanee Hayden Carter striking at the death to grab a late point.
John Mousinho made two changes for the crucial contest, with Adrian Segecic and Harvey Blair both dropping out in place of Conor Chaplin and Gustavo Caballero.
But it was the hosts who had the brighter start to the proceedings at Ewood Park, with Pompey let off the hooks inside the first four minutes.
Ryoya Morishita broke down the Blues’ left-flank before delivering a teasing ball into the box, where he found the unmarked Yuki Ohashi.
The striker lost all composure from eight-yards out and fired his effort over the bar in front of the travelling Fratton faithful.
Mousinho’s troops did grow into the contest and should’ve been able to find an opener following impressive set-piece deliveries from Zak Swanson and Marlon Pack.
From there, though, clear-cut chances became very few and far between in a cagy opening 45 minutes in the crucial contest at the foot of the Championship table.
Blackburn did have a shout for a penalty mid-way through the first half, when Morishita went down in the box after a slight push from Pack. Referee Tom Neild remained unmoved and correctly waved away any Rovers appeals.
Chaplin, Ebou Adams and Terry Devlin all lined-up long range efforts for the Blues, but were unable to really test Balazs Toth.
Although chances were scarce, Pompey did control large parts of the play, holding 65 per cent of the possession at the break after amassing 316 passes.
Just like the first period, though, O’Neill’s men began the half the strongest and were unlucky not to break the deadlock just six minutes after the break.
Ohashi received the ball on the edge of the box before he cut in on his right foot and unleashed an effort just wide of the mark.
Minutes later, Rovers had another opportunity from the same position when Yuri Ribeiro fired a powerful shot just wide of Nicolas Schmid’s goal.
There was concerns for the Blues 65 minutes in when Regan Poole was forced off through injury and was replaced by Conor Shaughnessy, who returned to action after a quad issue forced him to miss the Blues’ previous nine matches.
Mousinho rolled the dice late on as Jacob Brown and Blair were introduced late on to break the deadlock in Lancashire.
And with five minutes to play, Pompey found a breakthrough when Brown met Segecic’s free-kick. The loose ball in the box then landed kindly for Ogilvie, who fired in a first-time effort to send the 1,845 travelling supporters into raptures.
But that goal brought the contest to light as Blackburn piled on the pressure in stoppage-time.
The host were able to find a late leveller as Carter’s header clipped the post and was enough to beat Nicolas Schmid in goal.
That proved to be the last of the action at Ewood Park, with the point leaving Pompey five points clear of the bottom three.
