Forget Salah or Van Dijk: Slot names another Liverpool star as 'maybe the best in the world' in one area

Dominik Szoboszlai’s work rate at Liverpool is second to none in the 2025/26 season.

For many years now, there has been much debate around whether Virgil van Dijk is the best centre-back in the Premier League, while Mohamed Salah’s record at Liverpool puts him in the conversation as one of the all-time greats.

However, Arne Slot has now suggested that Szoboszlai should be in the conversation for ‘best in the world’ when it comes to pressing.

Arne Slot praises Dominik Szoboszlai’s pressing ability

The Hungarian has already been called Liverpool’s best player by several pundits this season, including Steven Gerrard.

His versatility has proven invaluable to Slot, who has had to use Szoboszlai at right-back and on the wing this term.

Now, in an interview with TNT Sports, the Liverpool manager has heaped praise on the natural midfielder and his work rate.

He said: “Now I think Dominik has a lot of qualities. So he’s an all-round player, an all-round midfielder, a modern midfielder in my opinion.

“Last season he was already very good mainly off the ball, a bit on the ball and I think he’s improved his game this season even more on the ball and as I said, off the ball, he’s yeah top three, top four, top five in the world and maybe the best in the world in terms of pressing.”

Dominik Szoboszlai among players with most possession won in Premier League

The 25-year-old’s ability to close down opposition players is on full display when looking at the players who have won the most possession in the Premier League this term.

As per Opta, the Liverpool star has won the ball back 142 times in 27 league matches this term.

Interestingly, Liverpool-linked Elliot Anderson tops the list:

Player Appearances Possession won

Elliot Anderson 29 243

Joao Gomes 28 158

Andre 27 157

Declan Rice 29 150

Adrien Truffert 29 149

James Ganrer 29 145

Dominik Szoboszlai 27 142

Midfield has been called a ‘big problem’ for the Reds this term, but having Anderson and Szoboszlai playing together would surely solve that issue, given how hard they both work for their respective sides.
