Broncos' Sean Payton expected to push for 'big-play' impact players at two positions

Entering the 2026 NFL offseason, the Denver Broncos are trying to continue their ascension and make it to the Super Bowl after an AFC Championship appearance in 2025.

To do so, the Broncos have a few clear needs to address this offseason. While linebacker is a massive need on the defensive side of the ball, two offensive positions need addressing this spring.

ESPN's Jeff Legwold expects that Sean Payton will zero in on those two positions and add "big-play" impact players at running back and tight end this offseason.

Broncos expected to add 'big-play' impact RB, TE

"Expect Payton to push for offseason moves to improve the offense's big-play impact, especially at tight end and running back," Legwold writes.

Evan Engram did not live up to the hype for the Broncos last year, as he caught just 50 of 76 targets for 461 yards and one touchdown.

For someone meant to be a "joker" in 2025, Engram's season was not nearly that impactful. The Broncos need to address the tight end position in some regard this offseason.

But, arguably, the bigger need is at running back. While RJ Harvey is a solid player and will enter his second year with some optimism, the Broncos need to add a veteran running back with big-play ability.

J.K. Dobbins is hitting free agency, and they could bring him back, or they could try to upgrade with a Kenneth Walker III. Travis Etienne Jr. or Rico Dowdle in free agency.

As Legwold noted, "Dobbins led the team in big-play runs (10 yards or more) with 21, seven more than the next-best running back."

That's an alarming statistic, as he was out from Week 11 through the end of the year due to injury. The Broncos desperately need to add a big-play running back this offseason.

Bo Nix needs better playmakers at these spots, and Legwold expects both positions to be upgraded this offseason with help from Payton.
