“Special talent” – Virgil van Dijk on “constantly” helping Rio Ngumoha stay grounded

Virgil van Dijk has stressed the importance of ensuring Rio Ngumoha remains grounded at Liverpool, as his stock continues to rise.

The 17-year-old produced another eye-catching performance in Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Wolves on Friday, standing out as easily his side’s best attacking player.

Ngumoha has the world at his feet, but the same has applied to so many young prodigies throughout history, only for them to fail to reach their potential.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Van Dijk lauded the brilliance of the Englishman, admitting that he is speaking to him all the time to keep him level-headed.

"It was a very disappointing night, we had to make something right here, and the FA Cup is very important for us" ?

“Obviously we all see day in, day out how special [a] talent he is in terms of one-v-ones and the pace he drives at players,” Van Dijk said.

“He’s working hard, he’s a good boy and we are looking after him.

“We speak to him constantly and he needs to keep learning, keep soaking it all up and take it into his progress.

“[Friday] was a good day for him. Nothing more, nothing less. He has to keep going.”

Rio Ngumoha must combine talent and dedication at Liverpool

Ngumoha is a special talent who already looks in his comfort zone for Liverpool’s first team, despite still only being 17 years of age.

Ability can only get you so far, however, and the Englishman must continue to work hard and heed the words of Van Dijk, in order to reach his ceiling.

Ngumoha should use past Liverpool youngsters such as Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Raheem Sterling for inspiration, all of whom became elite players over time at Anfield.

That said, it is also the club’s job to ensure that the winger is managed carefully in terms of workload.

Fowler and Owen act as words of warning for Liverpool, with the pair peaking in their early 20s after arguably being played too much as teenagers.

But Ngumoha is pushing to start for the Reds away to Galatasaray on Tuesday, and on recent evidence, he is primed to play a key role between now and May.
