Devin Hester is a name that many NFL fans will remember, having played in the league for 11 seasons. He played for teams like the Chicago Bears, the Atlanta Falcons, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Seattle Seahawks.
Hester was a wide receiver and a return specialist, and was very good in the latter role. Currently, Hester is retired since 2016, but he recently revealed a quirky habit of his every season.
Devin Hester’s unique Super Bowl habit
Hester is a four-time Pro Bowler and has been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024. He holds multiple NFL records, with the most return touchdowns (20), the most punt return touchdowns (14), and the most kickoff return touchdowns (5). However, he is best known for one singular record that may never be broken.

He is the only player in NFL history to return the opening kickoff of a Super Bowl for a touchdown. The historic moment occurred in Super Bowl XLI on February 4, 2007 when the Bears faced off against the Indianapolis Colts. Hester fielded the opening kick from the Colts and ran 92 yards to score the opening touchdown of the game. Though the Bears ultimately lost 29-17, the moment had etched Hester in NFL history, and made him iconic among fans.
New kickoff rules mean that there is probably no chance of his record ever being broken by some other player. Years after his retirement, Hester still holds that achievement dear to his heart. He said that he watches the Super Bowl every year, but not like any other fan. He only watches it to see whether his record will be broken by some other player, and then stops watching the rest of the game.
He said, “Every year I watch the Super Bowl for the first 15 seconds just to see if somebody else gonna do it. And then after that, I turn the TV off.” However, many fans did not like this and criticized him for it.
Fans mock Devin Hester for Super Bowl habit
Many fans felt that Hester was being disrespectful to the NFL and mocked his Super Bowl watching habit. They also thought he doesn’t deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.
One user said, “Hester in the Hall of Fame is an actual joke.”
A second user wrote, “Up there with the 72 dolphins popping champagne level of petty”.
A third user replied, “I am now rooting for someone else to do it because this is corny”.
Another added, “This is so weak lmfao. Why is he in the Hall of Fame?”
A fifth remarked, “Egomaniac, got it! :)”
A sixth user commented, “Devin Hester is easily the worst player in the HOF. Easily.”
Devin Hester will have to wait for next year’s Super Bowl to see if his record is still unbroken.
