Broncos won't make a drastic move along offensive line before free agency after all

The Denver Broncos sure looked like a team that was ready to make a big change along their offensive line ahead of free agency.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN believed that the Broncos could be looking to trade starting guard Ben Powers and when the team signed reserve offensive lineman Alex Palczewski to a two-year extension right after that, the idea appeared to have legs.

However, Broncos 9News insider Mike Klis has poured cold water on that idea with this tweet.

Broncos will not be moving on from Ben Powers

Powers missed a huge portion of the season last year after tearing his biceps during a Week 5 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. He didn't return to the lineup until Week 16.

During that time, Palczewski filled in quite well for him and that led to the idea that Powers may be seen as expendable. Cutting Powers with a post-Hune 1st designation would have saved the Broncos $12.7 million against the salary cap and been a net gain of about $7.3 million once the dead money hit was figured in.

That was a move that made sense for the team, but the Broncos clearly appreciate the consistency of this particular group along the offensive line and don't want to shake that up.

Powers will be entering his fifth year with the Broncos in 2026 and will still have two years remaining on his deal following this coming season. To his credit, he had never missed a start for the team until that Week 5 injury.

Palczewski will continue to serve as the team's top option off the bench and one they will be quite confident in should he have to fill in at any point in the future. Undrafted out of Illinois in 2023, he will be entering his fourth season with the team.
