New Cleveland Browns head coach is undecided about the quarterback position this offseason.
The Browns are set to have a quarterback battle between Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson.
Despite Browns owner calling the trade for Watson a “big swing and miss” when talking to the media during the last offseason, Monken told reporters in February that Watson will have an opportunity to compete for the starting job in the fall.
"I think anytime that you have a player that at one time has exhibited the skillset at an elite level, I think you're always going to give them the benefit of the doubt that somehow we might be able to get that out of him again," Monken said, via Pro Football Talk.
Monken wants to “let it play out” during spring OTAs and training camp.
During an appearance on 92.3 The Fan, Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com said the Browns could look to add another veteran quarterback or a developmental quarterback like Clemson’s Cade Klubnick this offseason.
If Monken wants to add another quarterback, Cleveland would likely trade Gabriel.
“If they bring in another guy, then I think they would be open to trading Dillon Gabriel,” Cabot said. So,, I think that’s something to watch for over the next week. If they can get something for Dillon, maybe they’ve seen enough of him. And, maybe Todd Monken has seen enough of him.”
The Browns selected Gabriel in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The former Oregon standout appeared in 10 games and started in six during his rookie season.
Gabriel went 1-5 as a starter last season, going 110-of-185 passing for 937 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions.
Sanders was selected by the Browns in the fifth round of last year’s draft. He went 3-4 as a starter, going 225-of-451 passing for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
