49ers rumor could be precursor to signing of Colts or Packers free agent

The San Francisco 49ers have a desperate need at wide receiver this offseason, so the position should be a high priority for general manager John Lynch.

The Niners enter the offseason knowing that Brandon Aiyuk won't be back in 2026, and both Jauan Jennings and Kendrick Bourne are free agents. If those two depart in the coming days, it's going to be Ricky Pearsall and not much else behind him.

Safe to say, that simply isn't good enough.

The Niners do have a few targets at receiver, according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, who revealed San Francisco is interested in Indianapolis Colts pending free agent Alec Pierce and Green Bay Packers pending free agent Romeo Doubs.

"Along those lines, I’ve heard [the 49ers] have an interest in both Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs on the free-agent market," Breer reported.

Pierce and Doubs are two of the best options at wide receiver in free agency, and Pierce is widely considered the best.

The Colts wideout ripped off his first 1,000-yard season in 2025 while also once again showing he's an elite big-play weapon with a league-high 21.3 yards per reception, one yard fewer than his league-high mark from 2024.

Pierce recently made it quite clear he's going to test the open market, so it appears there is nothing the Colts can do to stop him.

In Green Bay, the expectation is Doubs will be moving on. The Packers do not have a lot of cap space and have enough wide receivers to let Doubs walk in free agency.

The former fourth-round pick has posted three seasons with at least 600 yards, and he tallied a career-high 724 in 2025. His best might still be ahead of him, as Doubs has been operating in a crowded wide receivers room for most of his career.

Pierce is going to be more expensive, with some estimates coming in at a deal north of $25 million per year. Doubs should be in that second tier of wide receiver contracts at around $15 million or so annually.

The Niners have $37 million in cap space, so they can afford either one. We would say Doubs is the more realistic signing for San Fran, though, as Pierce is going to be drawing an obscene amount of interest around the NFL.
