Speculation around the San Francisco 49ers’ offseason plans is intensifying, with wide receiver Romeo Doubs emerging as a name increasingly tied to the franchise ahead of the opening of free agency discussions.
National reporting has already connected Doubs to San Francisco. ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler previously described the receiver as both “a good fit” for the 49ers, pointing to a stylistic match with Kyle Shanahan’s offensive system.
Even with the growing chatter, no agreement has been reached at this stage. The timing of the speculation matters because the NFL’s legal negotiating period begins March 9, creating the window when teams and agents typically begin laying groundwork for deals that become official once the league year opens.
Doubs’ production makes the potential link understandable. The receiver has accumulated 202 receptions, 2,424 receiving yards, and 21 touchdowns across his career. During the 2025 season, he finished with 55 catches for 724 yards and six scores.
According to NFL.com, he is tied for the league lead in career touchdown receptions among players drafted in 2022. Green Bay’s own records also note that he became one of only three players in franchise history to reach at least 40 catches, 400 yards, and three touchdowns in each of his first three seasons.
While the numbers do not place Doubs among the league’s elite pass catchers, they represent consistent starter-level production from a 25-year-old wide receiver who has proven reliable in scoring situations.
San Francisco also evaluating draft prospects as secondary depth becomes a focus
Alongside the receiver speculation, the 49ers appear to be studying ways to reinforce the defensive backfield heading into the 2026 NFL Draft.
San Francisco already has three young safeties expected to contribute next season in Ji'Ayir Brown, Malik Mustapha, and Marques Sigle. However, with Jason Pinnock projected to depart through free agency, the roster could require additional depth at the position.
Arizona State safety Myles Rowser recently confirmed that the 49ers are among the organizations evaluating him during the pre-draft process. Speaking with Sports Illustrated’s Justin Melo, Rowser explained that San Francisco was one of several teams he spoke with directly.
“I had really good meetings with the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, and New York Jets,” Roswer said. “Those were a few teams that stuck out. The Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Ravens have all since reached out to me again.”
Rowser also revealed additional communication involving San Francisco’s scouting process.
“The 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, they’ve met with my defensive coordinator at Arizona State to talk about me as well. They have a really strong relationship. They had a good heart-to-heart about me.”
The Belleville, Michigan, native entered college football as a four-star recruit from Belleville High School before beginning his career at New Mexico State. He later transferred to Arizona State, where he spent two seasons.
Across 42 career appearances, Rowser recorded 251 tackles, 11 passes defended, one interception, one sack, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. At this stage of the draft cycle, evaluators generally project him as a Day 3 selection or a priority undrafted free agent.
