The German international has been side-lined for Liverpool’s last two matches.
Florian Wirtz returned to action for Liverpool on Friday night after sitting out the last two of the Reds’ Premier League fixtures against West Ham and Wolves.
Entering the pitch around the 70th minute mark, Arne Slot clearly looked to get the creative midfielder back up to speed before a crucial Champions League RO16 tie away at Galatasaray next Tuesday.
Despite a much-improved performance at Molineux last night compared to the one we saw on Tuesday, it is evident that Liverpool are at their best when Wirtz is on the pitch.
He experienced a slow start to the campaign, but as the footballing world knew from his time at Bayer Leverkusen, the talent was always going to shine through eventually.
Towards the end of last year, he started the click, and the goal contributions started pouring in.
In truth, the back injury suffered in the warm-up ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League fixture at Nottingham Forest came just as he was finding his feet, but he will be looking to re-discover his form now that he is back on the pitch for the Reds.
Upon his return to the pitch yesterday, Liverpool’s summer signing issued a simple message on social media.
The post on his Instagram held the caption: “Good to be back on the pitch! Liverpool FC next round secured.”
The return of Florian Wirtz will be seen as a significant boost to Liverpool as they approach the crucial point of the season.
Whilst there is work to do for Liverpool in terms of making up ground in their hunt for Champions Legue football next season, silverware is very much still a possibility for the Reds this season.
They are still in the Champions League and have just advanced to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.
Florian Wirtz picking up where he left off could be crucial to the Reds finishing the season with a trophy.
