Brazilian legend Ronaldinho once revealed the two opponents he found most difficult to face during his career. The former playmaker retired from professional football in 2015 after representing major clubs such as Barcelona, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain. During his career he won numerous domestic and European honours and was also part of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup-winning squad. He also formed a famous attacking trio alongside fellow Brazilian stars Rivaldo and Ronaldo.
Renowned for his extraordinary dribbling skills and creativity, Ronaldinho often left defenders struggling to stop him. His ability to control the ball in tight spaces and beat players with flair made him one of the most entertaining players of his generation. However, despite his brilliance, there were a couple of defenders who consistently made life difficult for him. Reflecting on his career, Ronaldinho highlighted two centre-backs as the toughest opponents he faced.

Ronaldinho in action for Barcelona
Speaking to ESPN, Ronaldinho explained that elite defenders who quickly closed down space and applied constant pressure were the most challenging to play against.
"The toughest opponents for me are the defenders who are tough in the way they play, where you can't see a way through."
One of the players he mentioned was Italian defensive icon Paolo Maldini. Ronaldinho faced Maldini four times during his time at Barcelona. In the 2004/05 Champions League group stage, Barcelona and AC Milan met twice, with Milan winning 1-0 at the San Siro before Barcelona secured a 2-1 victory at the Camp Nou, where Ronaldinho scored the winning goal. The two sides met again in the Champions League semi-finals in 2006, when Barcelona progressed to the final with a narrow 1-0 aggregate victory over the two legs.
Maldini enjoyed an extraordinary 25-year career with AC Milan, collecting 26 major trophies. His honours included five Champions League titles, seven Serie A championships and five UEFA Super Cups. Widely regarded as one of football’s greatest defenders, Maldini also finished third in the Ballon d'Or voting twice, in 1994 and 2003.

The second player Ronaldinho identified as a particularly difficult opponent was Chelsea captain John Terry. Between 2005 and 2006, Ronaldinho faced Terry’s Chelsea side six times in the Champions League.
In the 2005 round-of-16 second leg at Stamford Bridge, the Brazilian scored twice, including a remarkable goal that caught everyone by surprise when he struck the ball with the outside of his boot after a clever feint on the edge of the penalty area. Aside from that match, Ronaldinho managed just one goal in the other five games against Chelsea during that period.
In the same interview with ESPN, he said:
"Paolo Maldini and John Terry are two of the toughest men I have met on the field."
