Chelsea hold talks to sign Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez’s journey since leaving Anfield has been closely watched by Liverpool supporters.

The Uruguayan arrived on Merseyside in June 2022 after a breakout season with Benfica.

Liverpool paid an initial €75 million, with add-ons that could take the deal to €100 million.

At the time, it made him the club’s most expensive signing.

Nunez made an immediate impression.

He scored in the 3-1 Community Shield win over Manchester City.

From that point on, he became one of the most talked-about players in the squad.

His energy and relentless running made him a fan favourite.

However, his finishing often split opinion among supporters.

Across three seasons, he delivered respectable numbers.

Nunez scored 40 goals and registered 26 assists in 143 appearances for Liverpool.

He also left with silverware, including the Premier League title, the EFL Cup and the Community Shield.

Still, by the summer of 2025, Liverpool were reshaping the squad.

The club completed a massive rebuild worth over £400 million.

To fund major signings such as Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitiké, Liverpool accepted an offer from Al Hilal.

The Saudi club paid an initial £46.3 million, with the fee potentially rising to £56 million through bonuses.

Nunez signed a three-year contract worth around £400,000 per week.

The move offered him guaranteed starts, while Liverpool balanced the books during a huge transfer window.

His time in Saudi Arabia has been mixed so far.

As of March 2026, he has scored nine goals and provided five assists in 24 appearances for Al Hilal.

Now, a possible return to Europe is emerging.

According to the Daily Briefing, Chelsea have opened talks over a move for the former Liverpool striker.

Newcastle United are also monitoring the situation.

Nunez is reportedly expected to leave Al Hilal this summer.

A loan deal is being discussed as the most realistic option.

One source explained the growing interest from England.

“Premier League clubs are lining up for Nunez, there’s a very concrete possibility of him leaving Al Hilal for a return to Europe this summer.”

Chelsea have tracked him before and still believe he could add depth to their attack.

“Chelsea have liked Nunez for a while and still see him as someone to add spark and depth up front.”

His wages remain a challenge.

Nunez currently earns around £400,000 a week in Saudi Arabia.

However, he is believed to be open to a pay cut to secure a move back to Europe.

From a Liverpool perspective, the development is intriguing. Nunez always divided opinion at Anfield.

Yet his work rate and chaos up front were never in doubt.

If he does return to the Premier League, Liverpool supporters will certainly keep a close eye on how the next chapter unfolds.
