The New England Patriots lost the Super Bowl last season, and before they attempt to avenge their loss, Drake Maye is trying to enjoy his offseason.
Maye was seen in Tokyo attending the World Baseball Classic. He was photographed at Samurai Japan's matchup against Korea on Saturday morning, but his choice of attire has some Boston sports fans upset. He was wearing a Los Angeles Dodgers jersey, presumably with Shohei Ohtani's name and number on the back.
Fans are upset that Maye, the face of sports in the New England area, was not wearing a Boston Red Sox jersey. Obviously, Ohtani of the Dodgers is the face of baseball and the leader of Samurai Japan, but the Red Sox have a star of their own playing for Japan. Masataka Yoshida has been great in the World Baseball Classic so far, but Maye was not repping him.
"Gotta get that man a new jersey!" one fan wrote on X.
"Can we please get bro a Sox jersey," well-known Patriots fan account "Drake Maye Lover," said on X.
"Dude. Drake man. NEVER wear a Dodger jersey again. It's Redsox only bro," another fan wrote on X.
Fans clearly want to see Maye representing the local baseball team. However, it's not the biggest deal in the world that he is representing the Japanese team in Tokyo by wearing the jersey of their best player. The Dodgers are the most popular MLB team in Japan, and it's easy to spot thousands of Dodgers jerseys in the crowd during Japan's World Baseballl Classic games.
Maye's brother, Luke Maye, plays basketball for the Kobe Storks of the Japan Professional Basketball League. His brother's team is playing this weekend, and Maye seems to be catching some World Baseball Classic action while he's in Japan.
When he gets back to the New England area, however, he may want to swap his Dodgers jersey out for a Red Sox jersey.
