'Many years to come': Andy Robertson suggests the future of Liverpool was on full display against Wolves

Following Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Molineux, Andy Robertson was quick to point out the impact of the club’s youngest stars.

You could easily argue that Robertson was Liverpool’s best player on the night, but the performances of Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni caught the left-back’s eye.

Ngumoha made his case to Arne Slot to be starting more regularly, while Nyoni’s cameo against Wolves was practically flawless.

It’s great to see the two teenagers seizing their opportunity, and Robertson had only the highest of praise for his young teammates.

Robertson was particularly impressed with Ngumoha, who started the match and caused constant problems for the Wolves defence.

The Scottish international believes it was a breakout moment for the 17-year-old winger.

He told Liverpool FC after the game: “I thought he was excellent. I thought it was his best game in a Liverpool shirt. I thought his decision-making was spot on.

“I thought he made the right decisions when to pass, when to play, when to take on his man, when to go to the byline. I thought he had done it all tonight. And yeah, look, credit to him.”

It wasn’t just the starter who earned praise. Nyoni’s late cameo to help see out the game also drew a strong reaction. Despite only being 18, Nyoni showed a level of composure that suggested he belongs at the senior level.

Robertson continued: “I thought Trey, when he came on, was outstanding as well. These two are really, really important to the squad. They’re only young, but they’ve been growing and growing so much as the season’s been going on.

“We’ve been trying to help them as much as we can. And they’re going to be two important players for the club for many, many years to come.”

Liverpool need to trust the youngsters next season

The performances of Ngumoha and Nyoni at Molineux aren’t just feel-good stories for the academy — they are a clear indication of where Liverpool’s squad depth should come from next season.

Both teenagers have shown they can handle the intensity of senior football without looking out of place, and the natural next step is for Slot to integrate them even further.

As the summer transfer window approaches, the club’s recruitment team must take this into account. While the temptation is always there to spend big on established names, doing so could inadvertently block the path for the club’s brightest talents.

To avoid another Harvey Elliott situation, Liverpool should ensure their transfer business leaves room for Ngumoha and Nyoni to thrive. By prioritising their growth over redundant signings, the Reds can ensure these two starlets can live up to the expectations heLd by Robertson.
