The Green Bay Packers have made a bold move to shore up their linebacker corps, acquiring veteran Indianapolis Colts inside linebacker Zaire Franklin in exchange for defensive tackle Colby Wooden, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The trade comes as the Packers face the very real possibility of losing their leading tackler, Quay Walker, in free agency when the new league year begins next week. Franklin, 29, brings proven production and leadership to Green Bay as they prepare for life without Walker, who could command around $15 million per year on the open market after the Packers declined his fifth-year option last offseason.

Zaire Franklin has been a tackling machine throughout his career, leading the NFL in tackles in 2024 and serving as a defensive captain and special teams standout for the Colts.
He has two years remaining on a three-year, $31.26 million extension signed with Indianapolis, including a $6.24 million base salary for 2026 (with roster bonuses potentially pushing his total to $7.005 million) and an $8.24 million base in 2027 (up to $9.005 million if not renegotiated).
The deal contains no remaining guaranteed money, making him a cost-effective addition for Green Bay.
The trade marks the first major defensive acquisition under new Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, who was hired this offseason after Jeff Hafley departed to become head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Franklin’s downhill, run-stopping style fits well in Gannon’s scheme, even if the Colts’ shift to a younger, faster defense last season may have contributed to his availability.
Quay Walker’s Looming Free Agency Pushes Packers to Act
Quay Walker, the 2022 first-round pick, delivered a career-best 128 tackles in 2025 despite missing three games. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst spoke highly of him at the NFL Combine, saying:
“He’s obviously played very well for us in his time here and been an exceptional leader, and losing him would be tough. I think we have guys in house that can play and fill in if that’s not the case, but a lot of respect for Quay and if we’re able to get him back, I would be all for that.”
With Walker projected to hit free agency and command top-tier money, the Packers moved decisively to replace his production. Franklin’s experience and tackling prowess should help ease the transition, though his age and scheme fit will be closely watched.

For the Green Bay Packers, adding Zaire Franklin strengthens the inside linebacker room as they prepare for a potential Walker departure. The cost—sending Colby Wooden, a young defensive tackle with upside—reflects Green Bay’s willingness to invest in proven talent while maintaining draft flexibility.
The Indianapolis Colts, meanwhile, continue their push to get “younger and faster” on defense, as GM Chris Ballard stated after last season. Acquiring Wooden provides depth and potential along the line, aligning with their long-term vision.
This trade is one of the first major linebacker moves of the 2026 NFL offseason and sets the stage for an intriguing free agency period at the position.
