Newcastle United latest news: Kieran Trippier reacts to FA Cup defeat v Manchester City.

The Magpies led inside 20 minutes when Harvey Barnes latched onto a superb through ball by Sandro Tonali to slam the ball past James Trafford and give the hosts a deserved lead. Having already met four times this season, Pep Guardiola and Eddie Howe’s sides were no strangers to each other and the hosts would have known that their visitors would come back strongly from going a goal down.

And react they did with a period of sustained pressure that eventually ended in Savinho equalising after a teasing cross by Jeremy Doku. City’s dominance continued right up until half-time with Newcastle very happy to hear the whistle and have the chance to regroup at the break.

However, those 15 minutes did little to change the flow of the game and City quickly went ahead through Omar Marmoush. The Egyptian then added a second to put the game beyond doubt with the final 25 minutes almost a non-event as Howe’s side rarely threatened to drag themselves back into the contest.

Their defeat means all hopes of winning domestic silverware this season are now over with just the Champions League left to play for. City, meanwhile, secured passage to their ninth FA Cup quarter-final under Guardiola. The last time the Citizens failed to reach the final eight of the FA Cup under the Spaniard came back in 2018 when they were knocked out by Wigan Athletic.

Howe made four changes to his starting XI for the visit of Guardiola’s side and was able to welcome back Tino Livramento to a matchday squad for the first time since mid-January. The former Chelsea man started on the bench and was introduced to the game late on in place of Lewis Hall who had shifted to right-back after Kieran Trippier was withdrawn.

Trippier, who came through the ranks at City but never made a senior appearance for them, summed up the mood of the dressing room post-match, telling TNT Sports: “The first 30 minutes I thought we had done well. City are a top side and we have to take it on the chin today.

“City got the goal back and with the quality they have, we tried to press them but there's no excuses today, we got beat by the better team.”

The Magpies now have less than 72 hours to prepare for a Champions League clash against Barcelona in the last-16 of that competition. Tuesday night’s game against Barcelona will be Newcastle United’s fifth home match in a row in all competitions and it is one that Trippier is looking forward to: “We have to focus now on Tuesday,” he continued.

“The fans have always been with us through the ups and downs and they will be raring to go against Barcelona. It will be a massive occasion.”
