Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City dumped Newcastle United out of the FA Cup at the fifth round stage.
The Citizens came from 1-0 down to advance into the last eight of the competition following a goal from Savinho and a brace from Omar Marmoush.
Harvey Barnes ended a run of 12 matches without a goal to give the Magpies the lead in the 18th minute before the visitors equalised in the 39th minute through Savinho.
Marmoush put Man City ahead just two minutes into the second half and added his second in the 65th minute with a strike from distance.
Pep Guardiola on his ‘best-ever’ win at St James’ Park
Newcastle and Man City have met five times this season, with Eddie Howe’s side winning the Premier League meeting at St James’ Park, however have lost the last four.
Guardiola’s side beat United in both Carabao Cup semi-final legs and in the league at the Etihad, but the Spaniard says tonight was the best of the lot, not just this campaign but during his 10 years as City boss.
“Yeah, in the first one we could not win because of the quality of Newcastle and for other reasons that I don't remember,” Guardiola said. “And today was on the pitch as well, except for the first 15-20 minutes.
“It always happened, we talk about that, the first 15-20 minutes Newcastle we could not control.
“It's the best game we have played against Newcastle here in my period together in 10 years. It was an FA Cup and a difficult one, so I'm really, really pleased with how we behaved, how we played, defensively, offensively, the concentration.”
Omar Marmoush can’t stop scoring against Newcastle United
Marmoush has now scored seven goals in five games against Newcastle, meaning 50% of his goals for City have come against them.
“I don't remember his stats, but I had the feeling that he scored a lot of times against them,” Guardiola reacted. “He's a top striker and finishing, especially his second goal, our third, is his biggest quality.
“He had a little bit of time. He had to improve a little bit in the smaller spaces, a little bit in the first control, but he made a fantastic play.I'm so happy it's true for him.”
