Minnesota Vikings news: T.J. Hockenson’s contract has interesting restructure ahead of 2026…

The Minnesota Vikings are one of the few teams that are looking to shed some cap space for the 2026 season to be cap compliant before the league year begins. As a result, restructuring some of the players’ contracts is a way to do that without any cuts or trades. Tight end T.J. Hockenson was one of the players whose contract was restructured. As a result, it had some significant consequences for the Minnesota Vikings and Hockenson’s future. Let’s take a closer look to discuss exactly what happened and the result.

On Saturday, it was revealed that the Minnesota Vikings were restructuring tight end T.J. Hockenson’s contract, giving the team $5 million cap relief. However, the restructure also did something else to his deal that typically isn’t seen. NFL insider Tom Pelissero is reporting that as part of the restructuring, the final year of his contract was deleted, making Hockenson a free agent following the 2026 season opposed to the 2027 season.

In a position as premium as the tight end, Hockenson could be in a great position to get an additional massive contract. Currently, the top tight end free agents after this upcoming season include Kyle Pitts, Evan Engram, and Dawson Knox, which Hockenson is arguably more valuable then.

Hockenson had a solid season with the Minnesota Vikings last season despite the uncertainty at the quarterback position. He would play in 15 games and record 51 catches on 66 targets for 438 yards (8.6 yards per reception) with three touchdowns. It will be intriguing to see if a long-term deal is reached with the Vikings or if he will remain with the team going forward.
