12 Liverpool players who left last summer – and what happened next

Liverpool had a landmark summer of incomings last year, but they also bid farewell to a list of notable names who are now plying their trade across Europe.

The club splashed the cash off the back of their Premier League title success, but recouped £216 million in sales in a major overhaul of Arne Slot‘s squad.

There was significant change, perhaps too much in hindsight, and the success for those who moved away from Anfield has been mixed.

Here’s a look at 12 players who left last summer and how they are getting on.

Ben Gannon-Doak

Where is he now? Bournemouth

His switch to Bournemouth also came with a name change to honour both parents on the back of his shirt, but it has been seen only a handful of times this season.

His first, and only, start for the Cherries so far came in the League Cup, but he was hooked after 45 minutes. It remains his longest club appearance for his new club.

A serious hamstring injury sustained during Scotland’s World Cup qualifying has kept him sidelined since November and he now faces a race to prove his fitness for the tournament.

Jarell Quansah

Where is he now? Bayer Leverkusen

Liverpool could have done with keeping Quansah, but he does have a pre-agreed contract and buy-back clause from next summer, should the club wish to have him back.

He has been a big success in Germany to date, having featured in 31 of Leverkusen’s 36 games this season, of which 27 have been as part of the starting lineup.

Quansah has three goals to his name and is thriving with the regular senior minutes that would not have been forthcoming at Anfield.

Luis Diaz

Where is he now? Bayern Munich

Diaz’s departure weakened Liverpool’s attack, but it has bolstered Bayern’s, with the Colombian scoring 19 times and setting up a further 15 after 33 appearances.

The 29-year-old has embraced the change in intensity between the Premier League and Bundesliga and has not missed a game due to injury all season, although suspension has ruled him out of three games.

A Bundesliga title looks destined to be added to Diaz’s honour list with his side comfortably ahead of Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim.

Darwin Nunez

Where is he now? Al-Hilal

Sadly for Nunez, the writing already appears to be on the wall over his future with the Saudi club after they removed him from their league squad for the remainder of the season to accommodate Karim Benzema.

It means he is now only eligible for the AFC Champions League for the rest of the campaign, which has limited games left this season.

Liverpool will miss out on some add-ons they agreed as part of Nunez’s deal and will be expected to see him move on in the summer after only a year at Al-Hilal.

Tyler Morton

Where is he now? Lyon

Arguably, the player who is thriving the most in the wake of leaving his boyhood club having settled into life at Lyon seamlessly.

The midfielder is a regular starter for manager Paulo Fonseca and has two goals and three assists so far, with highlight reels often seeing Liverpool fans question why he was let go.

At 23, he needed the opportunity to compete in a senior environment and with the promise of minutes, and Lyon has proved the perfect club for Morton after a season in the cold in 2024/25.

Nat Phillips

Where is he now? West Brom

After nine years at the club and five previous loans, Phillips finally found a club he could call home in West Brom.

He is a consistent starter for the Baggies at centre-back but his season has been focused on avoiding relegation from the Championship, which they are precariously close to.

At 28, he has now eclipsed the most games he had previously played in a single season (33).

Caoimhin Kelleher

Where is he now? Brentford

Kelleher has spoken out about not regretting his decision to leave Liverpool and he is justified in doing so, having assumed the No. 1 role at Brentford with ease.

The Irishman has risen to the challenge of being a club’s leading goalkeeper and has continued to show off his impressive penalty saving efforts, with three already this campaign.

Instead of starting cup games he is now the one being rested and his position at Brentford leaves little doubt over his role as No. 1 for Ireland.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Where is he now? Real Madrid

There will certainly be a mix of supporters who do and do not want to hear about how Alexander-Arnold is getting on in the Spanish capital, and that’s completely understandable.

His first season at Real, though, has been disrupted by two different soft-tissue injuries which have limited his appearances and minutes.

You’ll all remember he was booed at Anfield after Xabi Alonso opted to introduce him off the bench, but he is no longer his manager, with Alvaro Arbeloa, another former Red, in the hot seat.

Where is he now? Shelbourne

The academy graduate’s permanent move was announced at the start of January, but he was already at Shelbourne prior to that having initially joined on loan last February.

The 22-year-old did feature in the Irish side’s Europa Conference League group stage but was suspended for the final three games after being shown a red card.

As their season runs through the calendar year, he is currently involved in pre-season training.

Dominic Corness

Where is he now? The New Saints

Corness left the club after 17 years over the summer as he sought a route to regular first-team football, which landed him at Cymru Premier side The New Saints.

He will feel vindicated for rejecting a new contract at Liverpool having played more than 34 games and close to 3,000 minutes, and there was a Champions League debut to boot as well.

Jakub Ojrzynski

Where is he now? Orebro SK

The young goalkeeper moved to Sweden to join Orebro SK, a club that plays its season from early April to early November.

Ojrzynski quickly got minutes under his belt after moving in the summer and has played 20 times for Orebro SK so far.

Ranel Young

Where is he now? Bristol City U21s

Young was twice involved in the first team under Arne Slot but made a surprise move to the Serbian second tier in the summer after opting to reject a new deal with the Reds.

He joined FK Usce but returned to England in January after only 162 minutes of action, and he now calls Bristol City home, though the winger is part of the U21 set up.
