Jeremy Jacquet faces a race against time to be available for the start of Liverpool's pre-season preparations after it was confirmed he is unlikely to play again this campaign.
Jacquet became the first Reds arrival of the summer when a £60million deal was agreed with Rennes last month to sign the centre-back in the next transfer window.
However, less than a week later the 20-year-old suffered a serious shoulder injury that forced him off 69 minutes into the French side's 3-1 defeat at Lens.
It was ultimately determined Jacquet required surgery with the player going under the knife last week to repair the damage.

And Rennes head coach Franck Haise has confirmed Jacquet will now return to the French club to continue his rehabilitation but doesn't expect the defender to play again this campaign.
"He'll be back sometime next week," he said. "After that, I don't control the rehabilitation process.
"It's probably unlikely we'll see him again this season, but the important thing is that he recovers well and can have his rehabilitation in good conditions."
Liverpool have been in constant dialogue with Rennes over Jacquet's treatment, and are still hopeful the player will be able to begin pre-season training in July when the Reds could be without a number of senior centre-backs.
Virgil van Dijk has World Cup commitments with Holland while Liverpool will be cautious over the fitness of Giovanni Leoni, who hasn't played since September due to an ACL injury.
Ibrahima Konate, meanwhile, is due to be out of contract at the end of June and, even if a new deal is agreed, will also be on World Cup duty with France.
